it is a new year but it is about the half-way point from last summer to the next summer. so i am thinking of our annual week at the beach in cayucos, california, the little beach town time forgot on the central coast of my beloved home state. it is about this time of year when i start yearning for cayucos & the internet is a great source of live cams [yep, there are a couple of live cams of life on the beaches of cayucos] & youtube videos about & in my beloved beach town.
it is a late saturday night/early sunday morning & i have pointed my browser to videos centered in cayuocos. which is typical for this time of year when i start thinking about this magical place. so i point my browser to videos of our special place.
& i remember that evening when i was climbing the stairs back to the street after a swim in the sea. nick, anna &the rest of my family were already back at home when i was ambling up the steps back to the street that will lead me back to our beach house. there was an older couple sitting on the bench at the top of the stairs. i might have already written about this meeting. . .
'do you like it,' they asked me.
'what.'
'the sunset,' they answered.
'yes, i do. it is very beautiful. me & my family have come here for several years now to have our week at the beach.'
'we made it especially for you.'
'huh?'
they told me about their history. how long they've lived in cayucos & why they bought a home here.
every evening at sunset they would come to this bench to watch the sun dip then disappear into the sea.
how the hell could i argue with them. the sunsets are very beautiful.
we made small talk. i told them my story, our history of returning to cayucos every summer. & now is the time of year when i start thinking of our return to the little beach town that time forgot.
