ode to joy

director spike jonze began his career by making some incredibly wild and creative music videos. this is one of my favorites, a deliberation of bad art perpetrated on an unsuspecting public. jonze is the lead dancer here, richard, and his awful troupe and choreography is just so joyous to behold. fuck negativity. there's been a lot of that lately. i have no idea if this video was indeed a piece guerrilla street art, or scripted. what it is is something i would call generous in its attitude and spirit. the song by fatboy slim, the direction by jonze and the people who are their latent viewing public -- that includes us too -- take pleasure in the hereness and muchness of the act of song and dance. that's not a pejorative, song and dance, as it is usually ascribed. in this instance, it is a plain of wonder.

I enjoyed this! Wonderful and heeee-larious!

But, Torrance? That's a former 'hood! I use to dance badly there, too!

Reminds me a little of
David Burns' "True Lies"..
he set out to lampoon smalltown
life and ended up being taken over
by the quirks and jinks of
real people here and now.

The video really is joyous.
Real people really are cool.
I saw some awesome muchness and
flavor at a poetry group last week
..amazing. Some people were their
own country, never seen anywhere
else.

I may be going a little local
for inspiration. So..yeah,
enjoy!

i'm glad you like it, too, jim and eileen.

i was just thinking of byrnes TRUE LIES and was talking about the film with a friend a couple of weeks ago. i've not seen it since the mom and pop video store age age. the same goes for the great talking heads concert film STOP MAKING SENSE, which i think, in my humble opinion, is simply one of the best concert films made, ever.
