philosopher richard rorty wrote a book in 1998, achieving our country.  a quote from that book is currently making the rounds on social media via professor at queen's university at ontario, lisa kerr.  rorty was quite prescient in his prediction on the rise of trump, or a person like trump.  here is the quote:

Good find, Richard. Rorty can be frustrating, but he can also be pretty good. One comment on the article you linked to. It ends:

Rorty suggests the left respond by "trying to mobilize what remains of our pride in being Americans," which was pretty much what Hillary Clinton did during the Democratic National Convention in what in retrospect was probably the high water mark of her campaign.

If pride in being an American was her best, no wonder she lost. I don't say this to criticize pride in America, at least not here, but Trump offered a much more visceral version of the same thing than she did.
